The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Ogun I Area Command has ushered in a new era of leadership with the appointment of Deputy Comptroller Olukayode Afeni as Acting Area Controller, reaffirming the Service’s resolve to enhance border security and promote lawful trade.
Speaking at the handover ceremony held in Idiroko on Thursday, December 4, 2025, Afeni praised the achievements of his predecessor and pledged to sustain the Command’s strong operational record.
“Under the leadership of my predecessor, this Command achieved major milestones in revenue collection, strengthened anti-smuggling operations, and deepened community engagement,” Afeni said. “Your dedication and strategic foresight have raised the bar. I salute your efforts and wish you success in your future endeavours.”
He underscored the strategic relevance of the Ogun border corridor to Nigeria’s economic and security landscape, assuring that the Command will continue to deploy intelligence-driven operations, enhance collaboration with stakeholders, and strengthen ties with border communities.
Afeni also charged officers and personnel to remain disciplined, professional, and committed, noting that the Command’s success relies on ethical conduct and an unwavering pursuit of excellence.
In his farewell address, outgoing Area Controller Comptroller Godwin Otunla expressed gratitude to the NCS management for its support throughout his tenure, which spanned April 24 to December 3, 2025. He highlighted key accomplishments, including significant strides in revenue generation and anti-smuggling efforts.
“The Command recorded remarkable achievements in revenue and enforcement. We intercepted seizures with a Duty Paid Value exceeding ₦1.9 trillion and collected ₦326 billion—up from ₦213 billion within the same period in 2024,” Otunla noted.
The ceremony ended with goodwill messages from stakeholders and guests, reinforcing a shared commitment to improving security and fostering development across border communities.
