The Ogun State Government has expressed deep condolences to the families of victims of a fatal road accident involving world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, who narrowly escaped death on Monday.
The crash occurred along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, around the Makun axis in Ogun State, and claimed the lives of two persons. Anthony Joshua and three others were reportedly travelling from Lagos to Sagamu when the incident happened.
Preliminary reports indicate that two male foreign nationals died on the spot. Their remains have been deposited at the Livewell Morgue in Sagamu. Joshua and the driver were rescued by security personnel attached to his convoy and rushed to a hospital, where they are receiving medical attention.
The sport utility vehicle conveying the occupants reportedly rammed into a stationary truck on the expressway. The damaged vehicle has been evacuated to the Sagamu Motor Traffic Division (MTD) office, while arrangements are ongoing to tow the truck for further investigation.
Describing the incident as painful and unfortunate, the Ogun State Government lamented the loss of lives and expressed sympathy with all those affected. It also urged motorists to exercise caution and strictly observe traffic rules, particularly during the festive season when road traffic is heavy.
Security agencies and road safety officers were further encouraged to intensify monitoring and enforcement across major highways in the state to safeguard lives and property.
The government prayed for the repose of the souls of the departed and wished the injured a speedy recovery, while asking God to grant the bereaved families the strength to bear the loss.
