A political leader and Younity advocate, Segun Showunmi, has urged Ogun State to abandon local comparisons and begin measuring its progress against global economies.
He warned that competing only with neighbouring states has limited ambition, calling instead for a development model inspired by countries like Portugal, where agriculture, industry, and exports are strategically linked.
Showunmi said Ogun must move beyond its “Gateway State” identity by focusing on production, value addition, and industrial clustering, citing examples from Austria and governance systems in Denmark.
He stressed that the Younity agenda should equip young people with skills and integrate them into productive sectors, noting that economic growth depends on turning population into productivity.
According to him, proximity to Lagos is not enough without deliberate planning, warning that Ogun must compete globally or risk “a slower, quieter failure.”
