The Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected allegations made by former Senator Iyabo Obasanjo in her resignation letter, insisting that she was accorded fair treatment and equal opportunities during her brief membership of the party.
Senator Obasanjo, who resigned from the APC in a letter dated May 31, 2026, cited alleged disrespect, intimidation of her supporters, and other grievances as reasons for her departure.
Responding to the claims, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Comrade Femi Nuberu, said the APC remains committed to democratic principles and respects the right of every member to freely choose their political affiliation.
Nuberu recalled that the former senator was welcomed into the party from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) only weeks before the commencement of the governorship primary election and was given the same opportunities as other aspirants seeking the party’s ticket.
According to him, the primary process eventually produced a consensus candidate, an outcome that Senator Obasanjo publicly accepted and pledged to support in the interest of party unity, inclusiveness, and the aspiration of a region of Ogun State that had yet to produce a governor.
The APC maintained that claims contained in her resignation letter did not reflect the reality of her experience within the party. It stressed that she enjoyed all the rights, privileges, and opportunities available to other aspirants and that the process was transparent, inclusive, and free from discrimination or intimidation.
The party further argued that Senator Obasanjo’s decision to leave the APC only weeks after joining it could reinforce perceptions that her membership was largely tied to her ambition of securing the party’s governorship ticket rather than a long-term commitment to its ideals and objectives.
“It is difficult to justify allegations of exclusion, intimidation or unfair treatment when she was accorded all the rights and privileges available to every other aspirant,” the party stated.
The APC also pointed out that several respected leaders and aspirants who did not achieve their desired outcomes during internal contests had remained loyal to the party, choosing to place collective interests above personal ambitions.
The party emphasized that politics thrives on loyalty, patience, sacrifice, and commitment to shared ideals, noting that democratic contests inevitably produce winners and losers.
According to the APC, true party faithful are distinguished by their willingness to remain committed to the collective cause regardless of personal outcomes.
The party additionally questioned claims relating to unmet conditions and unresolved grievances, noting that aspects of the governorship primary process were still ongoing at the time Senator Obasanjo submitted her resignation.
While wishing the former senator well in her future political endeavors, the APC reaffirmed its commitment to unity, inclusiveness, and the continued growth of the party in Ogun State.
