The Nigeria Union of Pensioners ( NUP), Ogun State has appealed to the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun to fulfil his electoral promises to them.
The State Chairman of the Union, Alhaji Waheed Oloyede made the appeal at the 2023 Pensioners’ day celebration in Abeokuta, the state capital.
Alhaji Oloyede who commended the Governor for paying the pensioners N10,000 each as palliative to cushion the effects of subsidy removal, urged him to fulfil his promise of releasing N1 billion quarterly for payment of pensions and gratuities.
The NUP Chairman, appealed to the government to as a matter of urgency convey the meeting of committee setup on consequential review of pensions, insisting that the committee only had meeting once since it’s inauguration.
He said the failure of the committee to meet has resulted to disappointments to the pensioners and greatly tainted the Governor’s good intention towards the union, urging Governor Abiodun to rekindle their hopes.
The pensioners also demanded for 40 percent peculiar allowance in pensions as it has been provided to the mainstream workers.
In his address, Prince Abiodun said despite meeting backlog of Pensions and gratuities, the government would ensure implementation of minimum pensions increment from N5,000 to N10,000
Abiodun represented by the Permanent Secretary of Bureau of State Pensions, Mr. Soji Adewuyi, assured that the state government would do everything within it’s capacity to improve the welfare of the pensioners.
