Comrade Wale Olanrewaju has been returned unopposed as Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council, earning a second three-year term to continue leading the union.
His re-emergence followed a smooth and orderly election held at the NUJ Secretariat in Oke Ilewo, Abeokuta. The process was supervised by delegates from the National Secretariat of the Union, led by the NUJ Vice President, Zone B, Ronke Samo.
The election, conducted on Thursday under tight security, saw the presence of personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), all deployed to ensure a peaceful exercise.
Also returned unopposed was Comrade Abiodun Lawal, who retained his position as Vice Chairman.
In the contested positions, Comrade Bunmi Adigun secured 153 votes to emerge Secretary, defeating Comrade Modupe Salabiu, who garnered 8 votes.
Adefeso Lukman was elected Financial Secretary with 161 votes, defeating Kunle Ibikunle, who polled 19 votes, while Olayinka Ezema returned unopposed as Auditor.
The newly constituted leadership is expected to build on ongoing reforms and strengthen the council’s commitment to professionalism and improved welfare for journalists across Ogun State.
In his acceptance speech, Comrade Olanrewaju reflected on his first term, describing the renewed mandate as a collective victory for all journalists in the state.
“I hereby accept this mandate as Chairman, and it is not only for me but for all journalists who believe in professionalism and better service delivery in Ogun State,” he said.
Recalling the covenant of integrity, trust, and resilience made three years earlier, Olanrewaju praised the electoral committee for a well-executed process. He described the election as “symbolic and simplified,” adding that its transparency would “bury the fear of godfatherism” within the union.
