A Consultant Urologist and Kidney Transplant Surgeon of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Osun State, Prof Tajudeen A. Badmus has identified high consumption of animal proteins such as bush meat, goat meats, red meat, as one of the risk factors for prostate cancer in our society.
He made it known today at a lecture on ‘Prostate Cancer: The Horror of Aging’ , in commemoration of 30th anniversary of the Federal Medical Center, Abeokuta.
The University Don also identified drugs used in enhancing erection as one of the high-risk factors of prostate cancer.
He identified diet as one of the causative factors that can be controlled by individuals, explaining that plant protein is protective of prostate cancer, unlike the animal protein.
Prof Badmus emphasized that ageing as the main cause of the prostate cancer, said there is a direct proportion of cancer with the process of ageing.
According to him, the risk of cancer increases as the age progresses, saying while 50% of people with age 50 develops prostate cancer, about 90% of people aged 100 come down with the prostate problem.
He advocated for consistent screening of persons above 50 years, as a way of getting early treatment and necessary medical advice.
In a similar manner, Prof Fatiu Abiola Arogundade, Honorary Consultant Physician/ Nephrologist at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex Ile-Ife Osun State who delivered a second lecture, titled “Kidney Failure: An Emerging Epidemic with Catastrophic Outcomes”, said early detection is crucial in treatment and prevention.
Prof Arogundade said drug abuse and excessive intake of alcohol with unmeasured and uncontrolled herbs increased the chances of kidney damage.
He lamented that most kidney problems are reported when they are at chronic stage with little or no chance of survival because of ignorance.
Prof Arogundade called on the public to always seek medical assistance anytime they notice any change in their body system, or unpleasant reaction.
