Apanpa Calls for More Attention to Seniors, Plan for Old Age

…COSROPIN holds first Senior Citizens Hang-out 

A prominent politician and business woman in Ogun State, Chief Mrs Iyabo Apanpa have called on individuals, corporate organizations and government to give more attention to the care of the seniors.

Chief Mrs Apanpa also said people should have adequate plans for them to enjoy their old age.

She made this known yesterday in Abeokuta the Ogun state capital during a gathering of the elderly  by the Coalition of Society for the Rights and Privileges of Older Persons in Nigeria(COSROPIN), at her maiden edition of Senior Citizens Hang-Out.

The event brought together elderly people from different communities and works of life in Abeokuta, to socialize and listen to health talks from medical professionals.

Chief Mrs Apanpa lamented the social and economic hardship faced by senior citizens, and lack of proper care by families, communities even government.

She called on Government at all levels to prioritize the security and well being of the older people who are reportedly  been threatened by harsh economic situation of our nation.

Resource Person, Pharmacist Gbolahan Fabiyi encouraged the elderly to be active by getting something to do so as to get their brain working. He said idleness after retirement makes the brain redundant, which will eventually affect proper functioning.

He added that most elderly disability are caused by individual negligence and overzealousness. 

Fabiyi emphasized that if most elderly people can adhere to medical and geriatricians advice, the aging process would have been more enjoyable.

Geriatric Nurse from Neuro Psychiatric Hospital, Aro, Godspower Onunka advised that seniors should seek medical help any time they noticed any wrong feelings. He said most dementia patients refused to seek medical help until the case becomes worse. He added that early detection makes treatment easy.
