The Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun 1 Area Command, has intercepted contraband goods worth over N1.4 billion, including a 2021 Rolls-Royce Ghost with a duty paid value of N905 million.
Other exotic cars seized by the command include a 2014 Mercedes-Benz 4Matic valued at N21.4 million and a 2018 Honda Accord valued at N32.2 million.
Speaking at a press briefing in Idiroko on Thursday, the Ogun 1 Area Controller, Comptroller Godwin Otunla, disclosed that other seizures within the period under review included 4,424 bags of foreign parboiled rice—equivalent to more than seven truckloads, 1,936 parcels of cannabis sativa (marijuana), and 105 used tyres.
The total duty paid value of all seizures stood at N1,401,531,923.95.
Otunla attributed the success to the command’s renewed commitment to curbing smuggling and safeguarding the nation’s economy.
“We will not relent in combating the menace of smuggling, nor bow to the antics of recalcitrant economic saboteurs who undermine our nation’s economy and security,” he said.
On revenue performance, the command generated N45,054,191.00 in July 2025, a 27.47% increase compared to the N35,327,852.00 recorded in the same period last year. Otunla credited the growth to enhanced compliance, improved border monitoring, and stronger stakeholder engagement.
In line with inter-agency collaboration, Otunla formally handed over the seized narcotics to NDLEA Commander, Idiroko Special Command, Ekundayo Williams, for further investigation and prosecution.
The Customs chief also warned smugglers and their collaborators to desist, stressing that no sophistication of smuggling tricks would escape the command’s vigilance.
“We remain resolute and unyielding. Our officers will continue to thwart your antics, and we shall bring the full weight of the law against you,” he vowed.
Otunla commended his operatives for their resilience, other security agencies for their cooperation, and patriotic border community members for providing credible intelligence that continues to aid operations.
