Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), yesterday said it will improve road traffic through technology driven road and traffic management.
The TRACE Corps Commander, Seni Ogunyemi made this known during the annual Trace Corps Commander’s Conference in Abeokuta, the state capital .
The theme of the workshop was “Improving The Road Safety Through Technology Driven Road and Traffic Management”.
Commander Ogunyemi disclosed that the essence of the workshop was to look into what to be done to reduce the carnages on major corridors .
He argued that technology is the best way to facilitate road traffic enforcement on our major corridors.
He said “We are looking at the major infrastructure in terms of road furnitures. We will be needing CCTV cameras to monitor all motoring publics around this corridors .
We also want to have a parley with the internal revenue service through their technology of vehicle licenses , by looking into the numbers of vehicle we would be able to get the bio data of the owner or the driver.
“We have joint taskforce in terms of special operations with other law enforcement agencies .All the services commander are very cooperative on that and we will continue to intensify efforts on this.”
The commissioner for transportation in Ogun State,Engineer Olugbenga Dario also added that technology is very important in transportation sector, describing it as solution to varieties of issues that human being actually face .
“The government responsibility is always to improve the infrastructure and as I have said we have done what we should do along the Sagamu Inter-Change to Abeokuta axis and also along Ijebu-Ode to Epe axis, and the Federal Government is doing same along Lagos-Ibadan express way.
The guest speaker Professor Kayode Oyesiku speaking with newsmen said,”Technological based solution is a demand of our society, and the agencies must respond to the demands.
In the last three years, we have had increase in the traffic flow as a result of the demand for interaction for economic development and growth.
“The others part of the observation is that of the enforcement . It is a bit worrisome and disturbing that over the years, enforcement are been out to question.In other words, we have people commiting crime, road safety, driving but yet the enforcement is limited and you can appreciate the fact that In the Nigerian environment , we have too many powerful and strong people around who perverted the traffic laws and regulations, it has make the enforcement almost an impossible task.
Establishment of fresh laws and regulations that will guide the use of the roads particularly within the cities.
We are yet to have a well established laws.”
