Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has lauded the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi, following his commendation by the Nigerian National Committee of the International Press Institute (IPI), describing the honour as a clear endorsement of professionalism and respect for democratic ideals.
Mr. Ajayi received the recognition at the IPI’s annual conference held earlier this month in Abuja, where President Bola Tinubu also noted the improving and more collaborative relationship between security agencies and the media.
In a statement issued on Saturday in Abeokuta, Governor Abiodun said the award was particularly noteworthy because it came from a reputable body within the Fourth Estate, renowned for its watchdog role in society.
According to the governor, the honour represents an “unassailable verdict” on the DSS Director-General’s commitment to human rights, press freedom and the rule of law, adding that such validation from the media community is deeply significant.
Governor Abiodun observed that since assuming office, Mr. Ajayi has grounded his leadership on professionalism, decency and discipline, while nurturing mutual respect between security agencies and journalists.
“The recognition conferred on the DSS Director-General by the Nigerian National Committee of the International Press Institute is a clear acknowledgement of his efforts to promote constructive engagement between the media and security agencies, with the ultimate goal of building a united and resilient front against insecurity,” the governor said.
He stressed that the honour underscores the importance of a free, vibrant and responsible press in a democratic society, noting that sustainable national development is best achieved where journalists can operate without fear or intimidation.
“This honour is well deserved and should serve as an inspiration to public office holders across the country to embrace transparency, accountability and good governance,” Abiodun added.
The governor expressed optimism that the cordial relationship between the Ogun State Government and the DSS would continue to deepen, while wishing Mr. Ajayi continued success in safeguarding national security in line with democratic principles.
