Gov Abiodun Welcomes Abeokuta Polo Club at Ground Breaking Ceremony

The Ogun state Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun was delighted yesterday, welcoming the historical commencement of Abeokuta Polo Club to the gateway state.

The legacy project, situated along Kobape Abeokuta road, had its ground breaking ceremony yesterday, attracting polo lovers around the country, and bringing dignitaries to watch a polo game on the soil of the gateway state for the first time.

The Governor represented by his Deputy, Engr Noimot Salako-Oyedele, explained that the sport initiative couldn’t have come at a better time than when the State is set to host the 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged Ogun Gateway Games 2025.

He added that Abeokuta Polo club was more than a sporting event , as it will open social and economic opportunities for the state and nation. He added that it is an addition to the tourism potential of the gateway state.

“This legacy project has the significant of socio economic potential, capable of attracting polo enthusiasts alongside players from around the world, boosting tourism, hospitality and investment in Ogun state.

“The initiative aligns with his Administration’s agenda to make Ogun state a preferred destination to live, work and play, calling on other investors to key into the vision of the Visioner both in supporting the successful delivery of the club and also to explore any complementary opportunities in hospitality, infrastructure and leisure that will further elevate sporting experience in the state. 

Prince Abiodun assured that his administration remain committed to providing the enabling environment for such ventures to flourish, using the opportunity to invite the audience to the Gateway Games holding in various sport centers across the state, promising them an exhilarating time. 

He commended the initiator and president of Abeokuta Polo Club, Dr Sheriff Abdulrahman Adams, for such a bold and commendable initiative, saying it positions Abeokuta alongside Lagos and Ibadan as a key hub for the sport of kings.

Speaking earlier, the Alake and paramount ruler of Egbaland, Oba (Dr) Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo Okukenu IV, who was the chairman of the event appealed to individuals and corporate organizations to key into the great initiative as he described Polo as a game of royalty.

Also, the Olowu of Owu, Oba (Prof) Saka Matemilola, assured the Polo Club of the supports of the traditional rulers in egbaland as the game is capable of promoting sports activities and as well provide job opportunities for youths in the state .

The President of Abeokuta Polo Club, Dr. Sherif Adams Abdulrahman, in his remarks, explained that the project is a world-class polo club that will not only elevate the sport in Ogun and Abeokuta in particular, but also to contribute meaningfully to the socio-economic development of the state.

Highlights of the event include the conferment of awards of grand patrons on Alake of EgbaLand Oba (Dr) Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo Okukenu IV, and patron on Olowu of Owu, Oba (Prof) Saka Matemilola.

Notable personalities, including Senator Ibikunle Amosun, former Governor of Ogun state, famous Egba Chief and father of former Speaker of House of Representative, Rt Hon Dimeji Bankole, Chief Suara Alani Bankole, Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Dr Tommy Coker were inducted into the club as members.

Dignitaries in attendance included traditional rulers, Service Chiefs, Political appointees, Captains of industries, Sports Stakeholders, among others.
