The youngest gubernatorial candidate of the leading opposition party in Ogun State, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP)Hon Olujobi Ezekiel Fayoyin has berated the Ogun State governor Prince Dapo Abiodun for his calculated and deliberate refusal to sign the bills on financial autonomy for state legislatures and judicial funds management into law.
It will be recalled that the Ogun State House of Assembly on June 11 2021 passed a bill for the law on state legislative funds management in the state, and one of the very first state house of assembly to pass the bill which is highly commendable.
Hon Fayoyin said, “No doubt the passage of the bill is a prerequisite for the implementation of financial autonomy for state legislatures across the nation, which will enhance the accountability, fairness, independence and efficiency.
The bill titled “H.B No. 067/OG/2021- A Bill for a Law to make provision for the Ogun State House of Assembly Legislative Funds Management and other Matters Connected therewith, 2021” had been long ago passed with clean copy of the bill transmitted to Governor Dapo Abiodun for his assent. It is worrisome that the Governor had refused to give assent several months after with no reason.”
He added that, “because we believe in a New Nigeria which Ogun state is not an exception, and for the fact I understand the value of separation of power which will translate to efficient checks and balances, which will in turn birth dedication and transparency in public service.
I’m not equally unaware that the Ogun State House of Assembly had also months ago passed the State Judiciary Funds Management Law, 2021, records shows that the house had initially passed the bill in June 2020. But was, however, not assented by governor Dapo Abiodun.
The bill, H.B. No. 068./OG/2020 A Bill for a law to make provision for the Ogun State Judiciary Funds Management and other Matters Connected therewith, 2021, which is expected to provide a legal framework for judicial autonomy in the state, which we consider is highly needed for a new Nigeria of of dream.”
Hon Fayoyin explained that,”I consider the two bills as very critical for a trustworthy and transparent leadership hence my promise to sign the two bills into law within my first 30days in office as executive governor of Ogun State, even as I’m assuring the good people of Ogun State that sports development, education, security, massive youth empowerment through industrialization,mechanized farming, subsidized tax for small businesses and adequate welfarism of the great Ogun workers. shall be our priority if voted into office come 2023.”
