Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has assured the people of Ijebuland that a new Awujale will emerge before May 29, 2027, as his administration continues efforts to facilitate a peaceful and widely acceptable succession process.Abiodun gave the assurance on Tuesday at the Ogun East Senatorial District stakeholders’ meeting in Ijebu-Ode, where he engaged representatives of various interest groups on traditional affairs, governance and the economic prospects of the district. The governor, according to a statement issued by his Media Adviser, Kayode Akinmade, acknowledged the importance of the Awujale institution to the cultural heritage, identity and unity of Ijebuland, urging residents to remain calm and patient as the necessary processes were being concluded. He said his administration was giving the succession process the attention it deserved, with a commitment to ensuring that the emergence of a new monarch was peaceful and enjoyed the acceptance and support of the people.Meanwhile, Abiodun highlighted the economic prospects of Ogun East Senatorial District, identifying oil exploration activities around Eba Island and the proposed Gateway Deep-Sea Port in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area as major projects capable of transforming the district. The governor said the proposed deep-sea port, alongside the Blue Marine Special Economic Zone, would attract investments, create employment opportunities and strengthen Ogun State’s position in maritime trade, manufacturing and logistics. He added that the projects would expand opportunities for local businesses, stimulate economic activities and enhance the commercial importance of Ogun East and other parts of the state.Abiodun also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to infrastructure development and investment promotion, appreciating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting critical projects and development initiatives in Ogun State.Representatives of various groups at the meeting, including market men and women, hunters, members of the Council of Baales and Olorituns, commended the governor for engaging grassroots stakeholders and providing an opportunity to discuss issues affecting their communities. The Awujale stool became vacant in July 2025 following the death of Oba Sikiru Adetona, who reigned for 65 years and died at the age of 91.The succession process has faced delays, with the Ogun State Government suspending the selection process in January 2026 amid concerns and petitions from stakeholders.
