The Ogun State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has called for closer collaboration with journalists as part of efforts to strengthen security and public safety across the state.
State Commandant, Remilekun Omolade Ekundayo, made the appeal during a familiarization visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Chapter, led by its chairman, Wale Olarenwaju.
Addressing members of the Union, Ekundayo described the visit as a strategic move aimed at reinforcing synergy between the Corps and the media, which she noted remains a critical stakeholder in the state’s security architecture.
She emphasized the pivotal role journalists play beyond news reporting, noting that the media shapes public perception, influences societal attitudes, and serves as a bridge between government institutions and citizens—especially on security matters.
The Commandant said the NSCDC, empowered by its establishing Act, is mandated to protect critical national assets and infrastructure, combat vandalism and economic sabotage, support disaster management, and promote community safety through initiatives such as Agro-Rangers and the Safe Schools programme.
Highlighting the Command’s achievements over the past 18 months, Ekundayo disclosed that over 210 suspects had been arrested for various offences, including vandalism, fraud, and illegal mining. She added that the Corps had successfully prevented several criminal activities through intelligence-led operations, while also protecting key infrastructure such as pipelines, railway corridors, and power installations.
According to her, the Command also resolved more than 170,000 disputes through alternative dispute resolution mechanisms and recovered over ₦23 million for victims of fraud-related cases.
While stressing that security is a collective responsibility, Ekundayo urged journalists to support the Corps through accurate and responsible reportage, public sensitization campaigns, and timely dissemination of verified information.
She reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to professionalism, transparency, and proactive service delivery, expressing optimism that sustained collaboration with the NUJ would enhance security awareness and contribute to a safer Ogun State.
