The Ogun State Government has announced the formation of a State Burial Committee to oversee official activities marking the passage of the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, GCON, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, and was laid to rest the following day.In a statement issued and signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, the committee has been tasked with planning and coordinating a befitting state burial in honour of the late monarch’s enduring legacy and invaluable contributions to the state and the nation.The committee is chaired by Mr. Talabi himself, with membership comprising top government officials and traditional representatives. The full list includes:1. Mr. Tokunbo Talabi – Secretary to the State Government (Chairman)2. Mr. Dapo Okunbanjo – Chief Economic Adviser/Commissioner for Finance3. Hon. Ganiyu Hamzat – Commissioner for Local Government & Chieftaincy Affairs4. Mrs. Kehinde Akinola – Permanent Secretary, Bureau of Protocol & Ceremonials5. Hon. Damilare Alebiosu – Chairman, Ijebu-Ode Local Government6. Oba Lawrence Adebajo – Orimolusi of Ijebu-Igbo (Ijebu Traditional Council representative)7. Otunba Giwa Adesanya Yusuf – Representative, Council of Otunbas8. Chief Oluwaranti Lekan-Osifeso – Representative, Council of Chiefs9. Otunba Adegboyega Adesoye – Representative, Balogun (Eleshins)10. Chief Tunde Odulaja – Representative, Heritage Group11. Otunba Kunle Ogunade – Representative, Regberegbe12. Dr. Rotimi Akinlesi – Permanent Secretary, Local Government & Chieftaincy Affairs (Secretary)At the committee’s inaugural meeting held on Thursday, July 17, 2025, members affirmed their commitment to working closely with the family of the late Awujale and other key stakeholders. The goal, according to the committee, is to ensure a dignified and inclusive programme of events befitting the stature of the revered monarch.The burial ceremonies are expected to draw high-profile dignitaries from across the country, including the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.Oba Adetona, who reigned for over six decades, was widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most influential traditional rulers. His demise marks the end of an era for the Ijebu people and the nation at large.
