Nigeria Custom Service,Ogun I Command Comptroller, Compt Bamidele Makinde, has commended legitimate business men and women at the border towns of the state for complying with the law in their business dealings.
He made this known to journalists at the Idiroko head office, while sending a stern warning to smugglers to desist from illicit business.
Comptroller Makinde assured the legitimate business community of the Command’s continued support for their act of patriotism and obeying the law.
He said, “Let me use this opportunity to commend the section of the business community which has been complying with the Federal Government fiscal policies.
“As for diehard and would be smugglers, we warn them to steer clear of smuggling activities as the full weight of the law will be brought to bear in any arrested perpetrator of such acts.
“I appeal to parents and guardians to help us in this regard by prevailing on their wards to desist from smuggling activities and confrontation with, or attack on security agencies.
“It’s important to note that activities embarked upon by the Command are driven by patriotism for the economic development and security of the nation.
“Nigeria Customs Service operatives, mindful of the rules of engagement, will continue to carry out their legitimate duties as prescribed by law”.
Giving the breakdown of the seizures recorded in the 2022 third quarters, the Comptroller added that the total Duty Paid Value (DPV) was Three Hundred and Forty-One Million, One Hundred and Sixteen Thousand, Two Hundred and Ninety Naira only ( ₦341,116,290.00) of which ₦38,537,267 only was the revenue from import duties and auction sales of Petroleum products.
In total, according to the Comptroller, two hundred and Twenty Seven (227) seizures, comprising the following were made:
– 16 units of Vehicles used as means of conveyance
– 2 units of used vehicles (Tokunbo)
2,706 kegs (67,650 Litres) of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS)
– 8 units of Motorcycle (Means of Conveyance)
– 80 kegs of Vegetable oil (25 Litres Each)
– 201 bales and 76 sacks of Secondhand Clothing
– 79 Sack of Used Shoes
– 20 wraps of Cannabis Sativa (Book Sizes)
– 89 bales of Textile (Wrapper)
– 17 Cartons of imported Tomato Paste (Smuggled)
– 5 Cartons of imported Spaghetti Pasta (Smuggled)
– 80 Pcs of Vegetable Oil (4.73Ltrs Each).
Meanwhile, the Sporting section of the Command had won a trophy in the just concluded SWAN Soccer Competition held at the MKO Stadium, Abeokuta, the State capital which was presented to the Comptroller and his management team during the briefing.
According to Comptroller Makinde, the team defeated the Fire Service Team in the finals to emerge the winner, having beaten the teams of Nigerian Army, NSCDC, IMMIGRATION and the Nigeria Police.
As the Defending Champion, Comptroller Makinde enjoined the players to continue to be an exemplary to their peers, as they make the service and the community proud.
