The Chief Executive Officer of Pelican Valley, a leading real estate company in Ogun State, Dr Babatunde Adeyemo, has called on journalists to uphold integrity, protect their professional reputation, and celebrate their contributions to society, describing the profession as a noble one that can open doors to greater opportunities.

Dr Adeyemo gave the advice on Monday when the executive and members of the Consolidated Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council, paid him a courtesy visit at the Pelican Valley office in Laderin, Abeokuta.

Reflecting on his early days as a reporter, the real estate entrepreneur said journalism played a significant role in shaping his journey and contributing to his present achievements. He urged media practitioners to remain committed to their professional responsibilities, stressing that diligence, integrity, and a good reputation could create opportunities beyond the newsroom.

“Journalists should celebrate themselves, and society should also celebrate them. Journalists are great people who know so much about what is happening in different areas of society. Their contributions deserve recognition and appreciation,” Adeyemo said.

“Journalism paved the way for where I am today. I still remember when I started as a reporter, working alongside my colleagues. I did my work diligently, and that experience taught me valuable lessons about commitment, integrity and the importance of building a good reputation.

“One thing I have learnt is that once you do your work diligently, maintain your integrity and protect your reputation, people will recognise your value and great opportunities can come your way. You may not know where your present commitment will lead you tomorrow, so it is important to remain steadfast and uphold the principles of the profession.”

He further advised journalists to be mindful of their conduct and relationships, noting that the reputation built through professional and personal lives could influence future opportunities.

“Let us learn to maintain a good image wherever we find ourselves. You never can tell where you will meet yourself tomorrow or who may become instrumental to your next opportunity. Therefore, journalists must remain professional, honest and responsible in the discharge of their duties,” he added.

Earlier in her address, the chapel chairman, Akintunde, appreciated Adeyemo for his contributions to the Consolidated Chapel and his support for journalism. She described his gesture as a demonstration of commitment to the growth of the profession and the welfare of media practitioners.

She said the visit provided an opportunity for the chapel to express gratitude, strengthen its relationship with the Pelican Valley boss, and encourage sustained collaboration between the media and the private sector.

Akintunde noted that journalism remained essential to society through its role in informing the public, promoting accountability, and providing a platform for citizens to express their concerns.

“We are here to sincerely appreciate you Dr Adeyemo for your contributions to the Consolidated Chapel and the journalism profession. We do not take his support for granted, and we believe that people who identify with the growth and welfare of journalists deserve to be recognised and encouraged.

“Journalists have a crucial responsibility to society. Beyond reporting events, we help to shape public discourse, hold institutions accountable and bring important issues to the attention of the government and the people. We therefore appreciate individuals such as Mr Adeyemo, who recognise the value of our work and support the profession,” she said.

She also commended Adeyemo for sharing his personal experience in journalism and encouraging practitioners to maintain high ethical standards, describing his journey as a reminder that integrity and diligence remain important foundations for professional growth.

Akintunde reaffirmed the chapel’s commitment to professionalism, responsible journalism, and initiatives that promote the welfare of its members. She expressed optimism that the relationship between the chapel and Pelican Valley would continue to grow.
