The lawmaker representing Badagry Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Prince Sesi Oluwaseun Whingan, alongside his wife, Tosin Whingan, has inaugurated the Clean-Up Badagry Recycling Hub in a move aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and community development.
The facility, commissioned last Thursday, is expected to tackle growing waste management challenges in Badagry while encouraging recycling and responsible environmental practices. The event drew stakeholders, community leaders and environmental advocates, who described the project as a significant intervention for the coastal community.
Designed as a central collection and processing point for recyclable materials, the hub is set to reduce waste disposal in landfills and waterways. It also aligns with global sustainability goals targeted at mitigating climate change and fostering cleaner urban environments.
Speaking at the launch, Whingan described the initiative as a “bold step towards a cleaner and more sustainable Badagry,” adding that beyond environmental benefits, the project will create economic opportunities. He noted that residents—particularly youths and women—will benefit from jobs in waste collection, sorting and recycling processes.
In her remarks, Tosin Whingan, who chairs the Clean-Up Badagry Initiative, stressed the importance of environmental cleanliness to public health and urged residents to adopt waste sorting practices and participate actively in the programme.
The recycling hub forms part of a broader range of interventions supported by the lawmaker since his election into the 10th National Assembly, spanning education, infrastructure, technology and environmental health.
Officials say the project will collaborate with local councils and private waste management firms to ensure sustainability and long-term impact.
Residents welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely solution to waste challenges in the area. Observers note that the project positions Badagry as an emerging hub for sustainable development in Lagos State.
