The Ogun State Gubernatorial Candidate of the leading opposition party, New Nigeria People’s Party(NNPP), Hon Ezekiel Fayoyin have condemned the tyrannical attitude of the All Progressive Congress government in muscling the local government, and rendered it worthless despite its closeness to the grassroot people .
Hon Fayoyin added that the only way to revive the local government is to grant financial autonomy, and provide avenues to flourish, showing what governance should be to the least at the grassroots level.
The NNPP candidates made the remark yesterday while responding to the National President of Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE Comrade Akeem Olatunji Ambali’s call to rescue the local government from extinction with present efforts of financial muscling.
Comrade Ambali made the plea during the Stakeholders’ Forum on the 5th alterations of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as altered) held at the Conference Hall, Ground Floor of the House of Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, during the week.
He described the challenges of local government administration as enormous, and declared that, “It is time to rescue Nigerians from the hands of tyrants”.
Hon Fayoyin said the muscling of the local government was to make the grassroots people irrelevant despite their population, but often visit them during electioneering.
He said the forthcoming general election is an opportunity for the people to change the narrative by voting for NNPP at all levels. He added that his government will grant local government autonomy and see to development of the grassroots in the state.
Hon Fayoyin called on the NULGE members , community leaders, market leaders, student Union bodies, Nigerian Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress, National Union of Road Transport Workers, Nigeria Union of Teachers,Road Transport Employer Association of Nigeria, professional bodies to support the dream of a new Ogun State of NNPP to have a better society.
