The Commandant of Ogun NSCDC, Hammed Abodunrin said his Commandant would be willing to help in training and effective security news coverage and Investigation as a means of cementing media and security relationship in the state.
He made the promise yesterday at the award ceremony organised by Community Newspaper Publisher and online News Editors and Publisher of Federated Chapel,NUJ Ogun Council at Continental Suites and Hotel Ibara Abeokuta.
Abodunrin said the lack of adequate training and the influence of social media that have turned everyone to Journalist have encouraged the spread of Fake News.
He said,”the urgly incident of the EndSARS violence have made us to understand that fact checking of information is our collective responsibility.Social media is full of junks that need to be verified before sharing.Journalists need to have adequate training on what is real news,and fake news,and the security implications”.
He added that,”as a gatekeeper,you own the public the right to a verified information,not a hearsay or cooked story.Its unethical to publish unverified allegation, especially on Public figures based on sentiment.You ought to leave the news judgement to the reader or viewers,just present your facts and reports.”
Earlier,the Commissioner of Police,Ogun state command,CP Edward Ajogun in his address appreciated the NUJ especially the Community Newspaper Publisher for their role during the EndSARS violence by giving the right security coverage which helped to curtail the violence.He urged the men of the forth estate to be ethical any patriotic in discharging their duties in the face of security challenges in the state.
He also advised the group to sanitise the journalistic profession by taking off the fake and unprofessional members to build a formidable relationship with security agencies in nation building.
The event withnessed Celebration of many personalities who were given awards for their contribution to the society.Among the awardees were, Ogun NSCDC COMMANDANT,Hammed Abodunrin,OGUN PCRC Chairman,Ven Samson Popoola,CP Edward Ajogun,AIG Ahmed Iliyasu,Hon Segun Sowunmi,Hon ADESHINA Adejumo,Ogun state Commissioner for Health,Dr Tomi Coker,Hon Atinuke Bello,and many others.
