Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, on Tuesday paid a condolence visit to Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, and the family of the late Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, describing the revered monarch as a national icon whose contributions left a lasting mark on Nigeria’s socio-economic landscape.
Governor Zulum led a high-powered delegation to the Governor’s Office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, where he met with Governor Abiodun and two sons of the late monarch to deliver his sympathies in person.
“The passing of Kabiyesi is not only a loss to Ogun State but a deep loss to the people and government of Borno State,” Zulum said. “The dignity and personality of the Awujale were never in doubt. His leadership and wisdom earned him a place among the most respected monarchs in the country.”
He emphasized the strong cultural and historical ties between the people of Borno and the Yoruba of southwestern Nigeria, noting that such relationships must be continually honored.
“We couldn’t simply offer condolences over the phone. It was important to be here physically to express our respect and sympathy,” Zulum added. “The Awujale was a good man, and we pray that his family finds strength to bear this painful loss.”
The governor also commended Prince Dapo Abiodun for his bridge-building efforts across Nigeria, transcending ethnic and political lines.
In his response, Governor Abiodun paid glowing tribute to the late monarch, describing Oba Adetona as a man of principle, unwavering integrity, and deep devotion to his people.
“He lived a life of truth. Kabiyesi never failed to say things as they were. He was a pillar of religious harmony in Ijebuland, treating all faiths and all subjects with fairness,” Abiodun said.
The governor expressed heartfelt appreciation for Zulum’s visit, revealing that he had first broken the news of the Awujale’s passing to the Borno governor during their recent trip to London, where they met with the late President Muhammadu Buhari.
“Your visit today means a lot to me. It shows your compassion and connection to the people of Ogun State. Ogun and Borno share strong historical and cultural bonds, and your presence here reaffirms those ties,” Abiodun said.
Prince Adesire Adetona, the first son of the late monarch, also spoke during the visit. He expressed deep appreciation for the national recognition and outpouring of support the family has received since the passing of their father.
“We are touched by the overwhelming love Nigerians have shown. Governor Zulum’s visit is a clear indication that the whole country stands with us during this moment of grief,” he said.
He also thanked Governor Abiodun for what he described as a befitting state burial for the late monarch and acknowledged the people of Ogun State for their unwavering support and affection.
Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who reigned for over six decades, passed away recently, marking the end of one of Nigeria’s most influential and principled traditional leadership eras.
