Initiative for Medical Diagnostic Awareness (IMDA) and ISN Products Nigeria Limited hosted the public to a health zoom virtual seminar on the Covid 19 pandemic.
The theme of the seminar “Diagnosis and management of Covid-19 pandemic” was discussed by various personalities in the health and medical field.
In his opening address, the Executive Director of ISN, Mr Felix Ofungwu who was represented by Dr Sandra Achebe said ISN is well prepared to provide a leading role in provision of diagnostic solutions.
One of the speakers,Prof Sunday Omilabu who is the Director Center for Human and Zoonotic Virology,Prof of Medical Virology, University of Lagos Teaching Hospital,Idi Araba Lagos spoke on changing patterns of Covid-19 and the possibility of re-infection.He said response to Covid-19 occurred between 7-14 days,and re-infection is possible if the patient is exposed,and immune response downgraded.He added that re-infection may occur once the immune system is downgraded,and anti body is reacting to the virus.He advised that our immune system should be guarded in the fight of the virus.
The Special Guest of Honor,Dr Abiola Idowu, Executive Secretary,HEFAMAA,spoke on the expectations of HEFAMAA during the Covid 19 pandemic.
She said HEFAMAA disseminated information to health facilities both private and public during the period,and had series of decontamination of health facilities.She added that,”we had sensitization of health facilities on Covid-19 patient,and mandating them to refer patient to isolation centres.We also mandated health management to put preventive measures in place for the safety of their personnels.”
Dr Idowu said HEFAMAA expectations from isolation centres include, biosafety and biosecurity compliance,good infrastructural layout, adequate number of staff and trained selected healthcare.
Also, HEFAMAA expectations from the public are hand washing, physical distancing and the use of facemask.
Also speaking,Dr Lorhen Akase,Head Infection Disease Unit, Department of Medicine University of Lagos Teaching Hospital,Lagos,on the complications on the prognosis of Covid-19.
He said the successful elimination of infection relies on the infected person.
Dr Akase mentioned that,” a well adapted response in mild/moderate Covid-19 is characterised by Ab-secreting cells which appears at the time of viral clearance,and emergence of follicular T-cells at the same time as ASCS.”
He added that age, co-morbidities, presence of complications/severity of disease and immune phenotype are the determinants of outcome.
Also speaking on the Diagnostic Markers of SaRS Covid-2 Infection and the Gray Areas,Dr Toyosi Raheem Deputy Director and Head,Clinical Diagnostic Laboratory,NIMR Yaba Lagos said it had changed from epidemic to pandemic.
He also said NIMR came up with different presentation during the period to strengthen Laboratory diagnosis for the fight of the pandemic.
Mr Daniel Adewumi who spoke for ISN at the event appreciated the organizers and all the participants, and rolled out his company contribution on Laboratory equipment during the period.
He said among ISN products are manual and automated extraction. He also said ISN provides training for their laboratory equipment and basic instructions on the effective use of it.
Prof Rasheed Arogundade, the Head of department of Radiodiagnostic of Lagos University Teaching Hospital took us through the roles radiology is playing in the fight against Covid 19 pandemic.
The IMDA Chairman, Prof Kolawole Oyedeji commended the collaboration between ISN and IMDA. He assured the participants to look ahead to more of such programs in future.
The program was jointly moderated by the Executive Director of IMDA, Adekoya Abimbola Julius and the Executive Secretary of IMDA, Dr Sola Olalekan.
